Spring Party Fun!

On April 29th we celebrated Spring with a "Spring Is Here" Party.  The day was filled with lots of smiles and laughter.  Handing out beach pails filled with toys for the smaller children and gift bags stuffed with clothing, gift cards, and games for the older children, it was a very happy day for all!

Anne's Bridal Shower Surprise!

Anne'sShower

Anne Bouchard (pictured  center), a Child Life Specialist on Ellison 18, received a wonderful surprise at her bridal shower.  Her bridal party had made a donation to Angels Above in lieu of shower favors. We were thrilled to accept the donation in honor of Anne, who we love!

Anne has worked closely with Angels Above for many years. She knows first hand how the children and their families benefit from the services provided by Angels Above. It is through donations, such as this one, that we are able to continue to help the children.

Our best to Anne and her fiancee, James, who will be married on July 25th!

And to the bridal party, a sincere thank you for your generosity.

Emily
A Note of Thanks!

This letter was received from a fifteen year-old patient, Emily Fay, after her two week hospital stay.  She received a visit from Angels Above at the Spring Party on April 29th.

Dear Angels Above,

I absolutely love everything you have done for me over the past two weeks.  Between your positivity and non-stop efforts to making my stay happier, I have definitely decided I would LOVE to come and be a volunteer here [at MGH].  All the little presents and surprises were completely unexpected and that's what sets this hospital apart from many others!  I would like to specially thank you for giving me an amazing Lucic pillow case.  That was so cool and my dad is extremely jealous!

Thanks again!

♥Emily Fay

YOU'RE VERY WELCOME EMILY!!

Sponsor a Party

springparty
We host many parties throughout the year for the children and their families and are in need of sponsors to help with the cost of the food. A typical party for the pediatric floors costs approximately $350. This includes pizza, salads, fruit trays, cookies, cupcakes, candy, soda, juice and water.

For just $25, you can become an "Angel Party Sponsor." Your name will be posted on the table and you'll receive a picture of the party. Please mark on your check "Angel Party Sponsor" and we will put your donation towards our next party.

Thanks for your support!

Gifts made in memory of
David Barnicle

BarnicleFamily

In February we were contacted by Sacha Field, a Child Life Specialist at MGHfC, informing us that a family from the adult oncology floor would like to have Angels Above be the recipient of donations made in memory of their loved one, David Barnicle.

We were so touched by the many donations from his family and friends that I asked his wife, Paula, and his daughter,Christen, to tell us a little bit about this man who was obviously loved and admired by many. (pictured above are Steve and Christen Schiavo, and Paula and David Barnicle)

This is their story.

David was a police officer in the city of Fitchburg and a friend to many.  As a little boy he always wanted to be a "cop".  He was a dedicated, honest, hard working police officer for twenty-five years. He worked all three shifts, walked the beat, drove a cruiser route, and was the dispatcher. After his retirement in 2001, he spent time with his friends and family. He was a fun loving man who liked a good joke, playing the lottery, a boat ride on the lake, home cooking, television (specifically, The Price is Right and Law and Order), and vacations at Hampton Beach. That's all it took to make him happy!

As David faced his illness, there were many issues and complications. His treatment took many twists and turns and he never complained.  As his condition became more serious, he was admitted to MGH for the final two months of his life.

The amazing part is how we all fell in to life at MGH.  We are not sure how he did it, but David won the hearts of many nurses, doctors and staff members on White 9.  Maybe it was his lack of complaints and his quiet acceptance or even that smile on his face, but everyone was his friend. A cup of ice cream and some ice water made him happy - that, and most of all, seeing us walk through the door every day.

Christen, her husband Steve and I would arrive as soon as our workday ended and stay until we had finished watching the 11:00 news. The whole staff became familiar with all of us as we trekked in every day through hail and sleet and ice and snow. We'd haul in our laptops, eat dinner, watch TV - just like we lived there! They were sensitive to all of our needs and treated us as a family unit as they took care of David.  It was that quality time with David that we cherish. It is that quality time with him and the staff of White 9 that allows us to have peace in our hearts and gentle memories of his final days with us. We are greatly indebted to all of the doctors, nurses and staff members at MGH who made David happy and comfortable and preserved every minute they could so we were able to have one more good day, one more kiss, and one more "I love you."

In our time of loss we reflected on how it took such "little things" to make David comfortable and happy. Christen and I both teach first grade so Angels Above was a perfect choice for us to have donations made in David's name. We learned that Angels Above provided very many "little things" to make so many children happy as they fight their disease. What better way than to extend our hand to help children at Massachusetts General Hospital. Thank you for all your efforts in that endeavor.

Sincerely,
Paula Barnicle

New Coffee Machine creates a BUZZ

coffeemaker

by Sacha Field

For the past 6 months, caregivers and parents of pediatric patients on Ellison 18 have had access to fresh, gourmet coffee twenty four hours a day.  Thanks to the generosity of Angels Above, a new Keurig single serving coffee machine has been purchased and placed in the playroom where parents can access coffee at any time of the day or night.

Many parents have commented that in the past, they have not felt comfortable leaving their child for the amount of time it can take to wait for an elevator, navigate the busy hospital hallways, stand in line to get a coffee and wait for another elevator to come back up to the floor.  This lengthy process can often take up to 20 minutes, if not more!  The new coffee machine eliminates this problem completely, allowing parents to literally walk a few feet down the hall, make a hot beverage of their choice (coffee, tea, hot coco, or chai) and grab a biscotti to go!  Before the patient even realizes that their parent is gone, they are back and feeling rejuvenated to continue giving the loving care the patient needs.

In addition to the convenience of the new coffee machine, everything that Angels Above provides is completely complimentary to the caregivers and parents.  The financial strain on hospitalized families is tremendous: being out of work, paying for meals and parking daily, plus any medical bills incurred can be overwhelming.  Although a small gesture, providing coffee and a snack to parents is one more way that Angels Above helps to make the hospital experience more positive.

The parent of one oncology patient who spends weeks at a time in the hospital said, "It's so nice to be able to take our visitors down to the playroom, sit and talk with them and have a cup of coffee.  This is especially helpful when Raquel is not feeling well and needs the room quiet to rest.  Drinking coffee has become my favorite hobby in the hospital!"

On behalf of countless grateful parents, thank you Angels Above for the delicious coffee!
Nicholas Goes To The North Pole!

christmas2008

by Ashley Reardon

As a Child Life Specialist within Pediatrics, we have the unique opportunity to work with many children and families. Some children we get to know over a long period of time and, in turn, get to know what special things can truly bring a smile to their face.

With the very generous assistance from Angels Above, our Child Life Department is so fortunate to be able to purchase special gifts for the children when various occasions arise.

During the holiday season, Angels Above is especially passionate about finding those extra special gifts for our patients. One particular patient came to mind when thinking about "the perfect gift." His name is Nicholas. I have had the pleasure of knowing Nichols and his family for a few years now and know very well just how much he loves Trains! Being one of Santa's little helpers in disguise, I found out that Nicholas has wanted to go to the North Pole on the Polar Express for quite some time. There wasn't a more perfect gift for Nicholas then sending him and his family on the Polar Express.

When I let Angels Above know about his wish they were so delighted to be able to make that very special moment happen for Nicholas.  So last December Nicholas and his parents got to ride upon the Polar Express up to the North Pole. Nicholas even got to sip on hot chocolate along the way while getting to enjoy each and every magical moment of his experience.

Without the support from Angels Above, I cannot imagine not being able to fully complete my role as a Child Life Specialist. Angels Above allows us the opportunity to help meet the individual needs of children and families and makes each patient feel so important and special. Our Child Life Department is truly grateful for all their support, which allows us to help normalize the hospital experience for our patients and families on a daily basis.

   Bye For Now
