Luau2011Sue
Our annual Luau is very special to Angels Above.  Each year it's held on the birthday of Kimberly Horman, who as most of you know, was the daughter of Sue and the inspiration for Angels Above.

It was a great day filled with fun and laughter.  Pictured above are Sue and Desiree, a long-time friend of Angels Above.  Please visit our website for more pictures of the day.

A big thank you to Pat and George Travers for sponsoring our party
!  We appreciate your support and kindness.

     News!

Fall 2011

Dear Dave,

Fall is here which means apple picking, pumpkin carving and the changing leaves.  We are fortunate to live in a part of the country where the trees become so beautiful that people come from all around the world just to see this. It also means it's our busiest time of the year preparing for our annual fundraiser. This year marks our 10th Annual Twilight Affair and Silent Auction! If you've never joined us before, we hope you will this year.

A few days ago, my husband and I were in the car and I was telling him all the things I had to do in the next month when he said "look at that" and was pointing to a tree that had started to change color. I believe it was his way of telling me to stop, take a breath, and enjoy the season. That's just what I'm going to do….right after I get a few more auction items for the Twilight!!

Warmest Regards,
Mary Beth Brunelle

Hospital Room Makeover Brings

Comfort and Cheer to Pediatric Patient

 Katherine

By Sacha Field and Anne Pizzano, Child Life Specialists

Katherine Grant is a lovely nineteen year old who was in her freshman year at Providence College when she received devastating news in April that she has an extremely rare brain tumor called ATRT (atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor).

As part of her treatment plan, she will need to undergo four back to back stem cell transplants. Each of these transplants require her to be hospitalized for a month. To help make each stay more pleasant, Angels Above provides funds to purchase bedding and decorations for her room. When asked what she thought of her room transformation she said "It makes it feel much less like a hospital and more like home. I feel more taken care of and am less likely to be grouchy when I am surrounded by these 'homey' touches. I think it's a really, REALLY great thing what they (Angels Above) do. It's almost like it normalizes this experience and makes it less daunting, which is a hard thing to do."

Currently, Katherine is in her 2nd transplant cycle and doing very well. Her goal is to be finished with treatment by Christmas!

The Rein of the Coloring King

Julien              By Ashley Reardon, Child Life Specialist

Thanks to Angels Above, our playroom on Ellison 17 is stocked full of wonderful things for children of all ages to enjoy.

For one adorable nine year old boy named Julien, we have many fun things for him to color.  Julien's favorite are the fuzzy posters.  He is certainly a fan of anything to do with art and has been with us on the unit for many weeks. However, Julien says that his time has flown by because of all the fun things he has been able to do.

"I love coloring fuzzy posters" says Julien. "It helps get me through the day and I like hanging all my art work up on my wall".

Because of Angels Above, we are able to provide many materials and fun opportunities to patients just like Julien. Our art cabinets and shelves are never empty because of Angels Above. We are truly grateful for their generosity and dedication to the children.
